ABOUT THE PIANO
Hello. I did not mention the fine trio album, finally finished, I had the chance to record, mix and master. Piano: Jobic Masson, bass: Peter Giron, Drums: John Betch. Demanding and original music highlighted by a large group. I hope the record will be released in the best possible conditions. Gentlemen farmers, are up to it!
A little technical, I only talk about the piano because I know a lot of discussions on the net exchange on this subject. So the piano was recorded with two stereo systems then mixed: a pair of omnis Neumann M 150 tube nearby and a pair of Sanken slightly outside the piano. The goal is to capture the texture of the piano and at the same time its width. It should be noted that on this occasion, Vincent, our precious tuner was more that never solved the piano to perfection. I think that's the most important. There are no miracle cures, you just adapt to the circumstances by answering some basic questions.
- Does the piano solo or piano is it integrated into a whole?
- The piano is it alone in the room, or are there other tools around?
- The piano is perfectly tuned it? Unison, alignment, balance, dynamic equality. It is the most important in my opinion. A microphone will always favor the more defects than qualities. It's sad but true.
- Propose systematically listen to pianist recorded. Consciously and unconsciously he will correct the defects of his playing the piano to trust him explaining that the sound will get better if the base is satisfactory.
- What type of music, what type of game, what color do we seek? Matter of taste, culture and common sense. That freedom is therefore what is more difficult. For a group, I think the most important is that the record supports the overall color, I prefer a less beautiful piano that fits a perfect instrument which affects the fluidity of the disc. Always think music as a priority; the music first, then the sound.
In conclusion, as to any musical instrument and even more to a piano: there's no method of recording adapted. Must be prepared to create from the instrument several types of recordings. The mono around (see some pop records) to the beauty of the stamp (some discs of Jazz, pop, variety ...) through the merger more or less successful with the surrounding acoustic (records). Then we can mix with the infinite.
